Published: Sep. 9, 2009

URBANA - With the Illinois unemployment rate at 10.3 percent, professionals who help counsel and retrain job seekers for a changing workplace will soon have an opportunity to upgrade their skills at a one-day training conference sponsored by the University of Illinois Center for Economic and Financial Education.

The conference, "Financing Your Future: Taking Charge of Your Career," will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. September 25 at the McLean County Extension Office in Bloomington.

The interactive training will focus on ways to effectively teach youth and limited resource audiences to take charge of their career in today's job market. For more information, visit http://financialed.ace.uiuc.edu/calendar/event_09_25_09.html .

According to center director Angela Lyons, the workshop will be particularly valuable for:

? Counselors and educators specializing in career/life skills who have students/clients in need of financial literacy training

? Financial education providers working with youth or limited resource audiences through nonprofit organizations, community groups, and government agencies

"Guest speakers from the financial industry, state agencies, and local businesses will discuss key employment issues facing job seekers. The conference will teach professionals ways to help people who are attempting to retool, develop new career skills, and earn additional income," said Lyons, also a U of I associate professor of agricultural and consumer economics.

Sessions will include:

? Finding Your Calling: Career Planning and Life Skills

? Building Your Career: The Ultimate in Career Roadmapping

All participants will receive free the "Financing Your Future" DVD curriculum, which includes five videos with complementary lesson plans to help students and clients develop the skills they will need to establish successful career plans and secure their financial futures, she said.

Participants will also receive "A Job for Me," a U of I Extension curriculum designed for students and adults who are seeking employment for the first time or are re-entering the job market. These free materials are a $250 value, she added.
